How to wash your face mask at home.

How to Store and Wash Masks

Reusable washable face masks are ideal but what's the best way to look after them? It's important that they are stored correctly when you're not using them and to prevent any possible contamination. Perhaps even consider having more than one mask on hand so that you can easily replace a dirty mask with a clean one. Make sure to remove your mask carefully and wash your hands after touching a used mask. Always remove your mask by the ear loops and avoid touching your face mask at all times. Always wash you hands immediately after removing your mask.

How to store your mask

Store your dirty mask in sealable plastic bag or a carry wash bag and machine wash in warm water as soon as possible. When buying a mask look for one that is triple layered and double stitched so washing multiple times won't be a problem when it comes to keeping its shape.  Face masks can often get dirty from make up, saliva and pollution so using a sealed plastic bag will keep them safe and prevent any possible spread of covid 19 if there has been exposure. Never reuse a dirty mask.

If you are taking off your mask temporarily to eat or drink keep it clean and safe by using a bag before placing in your purse, handbag or pocket. Make sure you wash or sanitise your hands after removing your mask and remember the best way to remove your mask is by using the ear loops.

Washing your mask

Wash your cloth mask whenever it gets dirty or at least daily. Unlike disposable face masks, reusable fabric masks need to be washed regularly. Ideally washing your mask in a delicates bag will help keep it's shape and alway completely dry your mask before wearing again. Using a damp mask may cause skin irritation so allow your mask to dry thoroughly before re using.

  • Include your mask with your regular laundry and wash your mask often. Having more than one mask will allow you to wear a fresh one every day so consider having a few to make it convenient for you.
  • Use regular laundry detergent and the appropriate settings according to the washing instructions on your mask.

If you are using a reusable face mask then you are to be congratulated. Medical masks are hailed as the "new plastic bag" and should only ever be used if necessary. Using a cloth face mask that's well designed and breathable is an ideal way to protect yourself but always remember to choose a mask that seals well around your nose and chin. Look for one that is machine washable and if possible one that has an adjustable nose piece built in. Comfort, safety and convenience is what you're looking for.
